Natyanjali was conceived and founded upon requests by a few enthusiastic dance students in San Antonio. Small informal classes were conducted in the breakfast room, which later graduated into the garage to accommodate the growing number of students. Since then, under the direction of Bana Ramanath, the center has prevailed against many odds to become one of the premier dance companies in San Antonio.
Natyanjali conducts weekly classes in classical and folk dances of India for adults and children in Austin and San Antonio. The classical dance form is the Bharata Natyam in the famous Kalakshetra style. Folk dances represent all regions of India. Natyanjali is committed to excellence in dance education and strives to instill and promote values of service, commitment, and integrity.
The center has received financial awards and recognition from the city and the state for its innovative productions and unique concepts and ideas.
Natyanjali has successfully organized and presented dance festivals and outreach programs, and participates in citywide and state-level special events. The proceeds from Natyanjali events are committed to promoting arts & culture and helping various community organizations.
The mission of Natyanjali is to promote world culture by creating an awareness that unity and diversity can coexist through dance as the medium. Besides ensuring professional quality of productions, the goals are to preserve and share traditional art forms, achieve cultural integration, and to foster understanding of diverse cultures. Natyanjali is a pioneer in creating a multicultural experience contributing to San Antonio's cultural enhancement.
